.Who IS This Guy?

Perhaps as you read this site, you think: "Who IS this guy? And why should I listen to what he has to say?"

The only reason you should listen is if you find it interesting. I have no film degree or anything. I'm just a guy who has been watching movies forever. I went through a few years when I was watching virtually everything that came out, but in the past few years I have cut way down on my intake of current movies [primarily because they suck], and have concentrated more on watching older movies on video. Also in the past few years I have come to realize that the "quality" movies I was seeing aren't much better in the quality department, and are much lower in the enjoyment department, than a lot of movies of ostensibly lesser quality. I also realized that watching bad movies is an instructive way to learn to read better movies. So I started to concentrate on bad movies, but the more I write for this site, I think it's not so much the bad that I like [because I hate a lot of those boring 50s B movies]: it's the CHEEESY.

That's why it's not entirely true to say that this site is all about bad movies. It's more about embracing the cheesy, more about watching movies for the enjoyment they give, and less about watching them for quality. I make no claim to be objective or credible. This is my opinion and my viewpoint, and if you don't like it, well, it's not too expensive to start your own website.

I don't write about every movie I see. I only write about them if I have something to say about them that I haven't seen said in a ton of other places. I also don't write about them if they don't fit into the purview of the site. Both of these rules are easily trumped if I just really love—or hate—the movie.

I believe that every movie can be interpreted, no matter how crappy it is, because someone somewhere thought it was a compelling enough story to tell, and... why did they think that story was compelling? I think that has to do with the psychology of the writer or director, and that's what I'm interested in.

I live in New York City. I am gay. I work as a web copywriter. I am in my late 30s. I have an English Lit degree. I have read the standard edition of Freud. I paint. I write. My favorite group is Saint Etienne. I grew up in Michigan. I love 'To The Lighthouse.' This website was conceived as I was sitting through Alone in the Dark and wishing I could tell people about all the silly things I noticed in it. And now here we are.

WHAT ABOUT THAT DRAWING?

That's by my friend Michele Roman. Why not check out her other drawings on her blog, or the beautiful paintings on her website.

CHECK OUT THE AD I'M IN

I wrote virtually this entire campaign for work, and insisted that I be in one. I am the drug addict in this ad.
